Disney has been releasing themed Holiday droids since 2015, but the first HALLOWEEN themed droid didn't get made until a year later during the Fall of 2016. Every droid was released single carded for $12.99 exclusively at Disney Theme Parks. Since 2016 we've seen a total of four different Halloween astromech droids and it's amazing to see how much R3-B0017 has appreciated in value on the secondary market. Here is an overview:
The very first Halloween themed droid was titled R2-B00 which was painted up in traditional Halloween colors. And just like every other themed droid from Disney it was part of the Droid Factory Build-A-Droid series, which means that the dome and all three legs can be removed from the droid.
The follow up droid to R2-B00 was R3-B0017 (the 17 stands for the year 2017) which was painted in a ghostly, glow-in-the-dark green color. Most of the Halloween themed astromech droids seem to sell for around $30 on Ebay, give and take. However, R3-B0017 fetches quite the premium and sells currently for around $100. Check to see how much it goes for on Ebay currently!
In 2018 Disney released the Candy Corn painted Astromech Droid R4-B0018 (again, 18 stands for the year 2018). The most interesting aspect of this droid is the story which Disney came up with. If you look at the packaging art you can see that the background looks a lot like Bespin's Cloud City, and indeed it is! The text on the packaging of R4-B0018 reads like this:
This droid is dedicated to serving the residents on the mining colony of Cloud City.
So, R4-B0018 was probably just off to the side so that we never actually saw the droid on screen. Clearly Disney was having fun and this is not to be taken too seriously :)
For 2019 Disney released R5-B0019 which was painted in glow-in-the-dark colors and a paint scheme which was remeniscent of a skeleton costume. Disney came up with this story:
This droid awaits his fate in the dark and formidable bowels of a sandcrawler.
Are you wondering what Sandcrawler? Well, the photo on the front of the card shows C-3PO and R2-D2 in the Sandcrawler from A New Hope, so who knows, maybe R5-B0019 was just off to the side and the camera just never showed the droid :) Disney is clearly having a lot of fun with these droids.
