Star Wars The Black Series - Slight Name Change, Logo Change & Packaging Change For 2027 And Beyond

Hasbro is full of surprises, and one of the surprises they announced during their San Diego Comic Con 2026 panel was that Star Wars: The Black Series will get an updated logo with a slight name change, along with entirely new packaging.

Shown below is the first figure revealed for 2027: Queen Amidala herself, presented in the newly redesigned Black Series packaging.

Touted as the beginning of a new era for 2027, Hasbro will remove “The” from The Black Series branding and refer to the line simply as Black Series moving forward. Figures in the basic assortment will continue to be packaged in boxes rather than on individual cardbacks. However, the connecting mural artwork on the side of each box will be replaced by a side-profile image of the figure. As a result, collectors will no longer have murals to assemble or complete on their shelves.

In our view, this packaging change feels like a mistimed attempt to refresh the line, as we have heard virtually no complaints about the current design feeling stale or outdated. On the contrary, collectors appeared to be very fond of the mural-style packaging. Hasbro also introduced enough variety through special releases, including Revenge of the Sith packaging, Kenner-inspired designs, Archive-style cardbacks, multipacks and convention exclusives, to keep the overall presentation feeling fresh. In late 2017 and into 2018, collectors frequently expressed that the red-and-black Black Series boxes had become stale and that the line was ready for a redesign. This time, however, there was no comparable demand for change.

Looking back at six years of figures released in The Black Series mural packaging, the overall collection now feels incomplete. The Empire Strikes Back received only four figures in the mural-style boxes over those six years, while The Rise of Skywalker received just one. Films such as Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi did not receive a single figure in this packaging, preventing collectors from building out murals for those movies on their shelves. Other parts of the franchise also feel underrepresented, including Shadows of the Empire or the just recently introduced animation sub-line with The Ronin and a joung Jedi Master Count Dooku with only two entries.
