Bespin Cloud Car

Hasbro’s Bespin Cloud Car was released in August 2010 as part of the Shadow of the Dark Side toy line, giving 3 3/4-inch Star Wars collectors a modern take on one of the most recognizable vehicles seen in the Bespin scenes from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

The Cloud Car was priced at $24.99 at release and was available as a wide retail release. While the vehicle did not include an action figure, that was fairly typical for this type of release at the time. Conveniently, The Vintage Collection Cloud Car Pilot was also available on single card around the same period, which made it easy for collectors to pick up one or two pilots to complete the display.

Packaging And Bespin Diorama Backdrop

Once the box is opened, you'll notice that the Bespin Cloud Car is made up of two individual pods that plug together in the middle to form the classic twin-pod Cloud Car design from The Empire Strikes Back. There aren't any stickers included and besides plugging both pods together there is nothing that needs to be done in order to have the ship ready to escort arriving guests. 

There was a 3D Bespin diorama cardboard backdrop included where the Cloud Car can be placed. That extra display piece is a fantastic bonus because it instantly gives the Cloud Car a dedicated shelf presence without needing a custom setup.

Vehicle Design

This Cloud Car was a newly sculpted vehicle and is quite different from the vintage Kenner version. The overall design feels clean, smooth, and very faithful to the Cloud Cars seen around Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back. The hull has sculpted details, but it does not feel overdesigned. That works in the vehicle’s favor because the on-screen Cloud Car has a sleek and elegant look.

Action Features

The Bespin Cloud Car came with four missiles. Two missiles are located on the outside of the vehicle, while two more are positioned in the center section. The outside missile launchers are especially fun because pushing the two Cloud Car pods together opens the launcher areas. Small buttons on the missile launchers then fire the missiles. The center missiles can also be launched, giving the vehicle a little more play value while still keeping the overall look collector-friendly.

Both pods also feature a manually deployable landing gear on the bottom. Once pulled out, the landing gear helps stabilize the Cloud Car nicely on display.

Cockpit And Mechanical Details

Each cockpit has enough room for a regular 3 3/4-inch Star Wars figure to sit comfortably inside. The cockpits are rather plain without any colorful displays or controls. The front engine sections on both pods can be opened to reveal mechanical details inside. It is a nice features and adds variety on how the Cloud Car can be displayed.

Final Thoughts

Considering that this Cloud Car was last released in 2010, the vehicle feels due for a return. A straight rerelease in classic looking TVC packaging would be welcome, but a slightly different paint application on the hull could make it even more interesting for longtime collectors. A Ralph McQuarrie-inspired version in blue colors would also be fantastic. The Cloud Car design is already unique within the Star Wars vehicle lineup, and a blue concept-art tribute could make for a very eye-catching display piece.

All things considered, if you are looking for a Bespin Cloud Car that works well with modern 3 3/4-inch Star Wars action figures, this 2010 Hasbro release is still worth tracking down. It has a strong sculpt, useful action features, a great shelf presence which doesn't feel outdated.
