The Power of the Jedi Carbon Freezing Chamber was released by Hasbro in 2001 as a Fan Club exclusive. Priced at $24.99, the playset included an exclusive Bespin Security Guard and recreated one of the most memorable sequences from The Empire Strikes Back, when Han Solo was frozen in carbonite on Cloud City.

The Carbon Freezing Chamber arrived during a transitional period for Hasbro, as the company was still moving away from the bulkier Power of the Force 2 figure style and into a more realistic approach for the Star Wars action figure line.
That transition is visible right on the packaging. The box art and photography still used several of the larger, more muscular Power of the Force 2 figures from the mid to late 1990s. It is also interesting that, at the time this set was released, Hasbro had not yet made a Princess Leia in Bespin Escape outfit, so the Bespin Gown Leia figure was used for the packaging photography instead.

Once out of the box, the Carbon Freezing Chamber does need to be assembled. There are quite a few parts included, but putting everything together is straightforward and should not take more than about 10 minutes.

No stickers were included with the playset, so there is no sticker application needed. Once assembled, the set is ready to go right away.
The Power of the Jedi Carbon Freezing Chamber has more going on than it might first appear. The top platform includes a large laser cannon with two missiles. A missile can be loaded into the cannon, and pressing the button launches it forward.

The playset can also be turned around, and each side offers a different display area or feature. One side includes a prison area with a door that can be opened. There is also a control console that can swivel slightly, which helps the area look more complete when posed with figures.

Another side houses the carbon freezing block, with a console placed in front of it. Add a few Ugnaughts nearby, and it makes for a fun little Cloud City display. Even the sides without major action features are detailed enough to work as background areas, with molded consoles and wall details that help the playset feel like a small diorama.
The set includes a carbon freezing block that can be placed inside the chamber. The main play feature allows a figure to be placed on the top platform. When the lever is pulled, the figure moves down into the playset. A second lever on the other side then moves the figure into the carbon freezing block.

Once inside, the block can be pulled out manually, with the figure captured inside. The feature is fun in concept, but the execution is a little clunky. The levers and mechanism do not work as smoothly as they probably should, but the idea is still neat and very toyetic.
When a figure is inside the carbonite block, you can tell that something is inside, but there is no detailed carbonite sculpt showing the figure from the outside. It gets the job done, but it is more of a play feature than a screen-accurate display piece.

The Carbon Freezing Chamber is fairly small, and the top platform does not offer a huge amount of room for figures. That was especially noticeable in 2001, when many Star Wars figures were still bulkier and took up more space than modern figures.
Still, the playset displays surprisingly well. The paint applications are nicely done, and the console and wall details look good for the time. It gives collectors an instant Cloud City diorama piece, which was especially welcome at a $24.99 price point.

Compared to the later Star Wars The Vintage Collection Carbon-Freezing Chamber, this Power of the Jedi version is completely different in approach. The Power of the Jedi set was clearly designed as a toy for children, with moving parts, missiles, levers, and hands-on play features.
That said, it is still enjoyable today. Spending time with the set, figuring out how the parts fit together, testing the features, and posing figures around it can still be a lot of fun. It feels very different from Hasbro’s modern collector-focused approach, where display value usually takes priority over play value.
The Power of the Jedi Carbon Freezing Chamber feels outdated by modern standards, but it still has charm. It is clunky in places, and the figure-freezing mechanism does not work perfectly, but the set has personality and offers a lot of play value.
Considering that Hasbro has only released a Carbon Freezing Chamber playset twice, once in the Power of the Jedi line and later in The Vintage Collection, this 2001 release remains an interesting piece. If you have a soft spot for early 2000s Star Wars toys or come across one on the secondary market, it is worth taking another look.
