Star Wars Episode 1 Trade Federation Tank

5/24/2026

The Star Wars Episode I Trade Federation Tank was released by Hasbro in 1999 as part of the Star Wars Episode I toy line. Based on the Battle of Naboo from Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the Trade Federation Tank gave collectors and kids a sizable vehicle for their Battle Droid armies and remains one of the more recognizable vehicles from the prequel era.

Widely available at retail during its original release, the Trade Federation Tank has held up surprisingly well over the years. With multiple display options, several action features, room for Battle Droid figures, and a strong on-screen connection to The Phantom Menace, this vehicle deserves a closer, which is what we are giving you here.

Packaging Text:

One of the most menacing vehicles in the Trade Federation’s arsenal, there is little that can stop an oncoming Trade Federation tank. Heavily armed with a powerful turret laser cannon, it also wields two side-mounted laser cannons and energy shell launchers. Despite the tank’s heavy armor, it could not withstand a direct hit from Gungan energy balls during the land battle of Naboo.

The Trade Federation Tank was released in Star Wars Episode I-style packaging, featuring Darth Maul artwork and the Star Wars Episode I logo on the box. The presentation fit right in with the 1999 Phantom Menace product line and clearly tied the vehicle to the Battle of Naboo.

Inside the box, Hasbro included the Trade Federation Tank, four missiles, a sticker sheet, and an instruction sheet. No figures were included, so collectors needed their own Battle Droids or other Star Wars figures to fully populate the vehicle.

Assembly

Some assembly was required out of the box, but putting the Trade Federation Tank together was fairly straightforward. The instruction sheet made the process easy to follow, and applying the labels was also manageable.

Between assembling the vehicle and carefully applying the stickers, the entire process took about 15 to 20 minutes. Once everything was in place, the tank had a finished look that matched the Trade Federation aesthetic from Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace quite well (the cockpit benefitted the most from the stickers).

Features

The Star Wars Episode I Trade Federation Tank came with four missiles that plug into the front hull of the vehicle. Each side of the rear section has a small button, and pressing the buttons launches the missiles from the front of the tank.

Hasbro also added four foot pegs on the front hull, two on each side, allowing Battle Droids or other Star Wars figures to stand on top of the vehicle. This gives the Trade Federation Tank a much more active display presence, especially when surrounded by additional Battle Droid figures.

The cockpit area has room for one pilot figure, while the rear turret hatch can also hold a Battle Droid or another compatible Star Wars action figure. The top turret rotates 360 degrees, and the main cannon can swivel up and down to approximately 90 degrees. The two side cannons can also rotate 360 degrees, giving the vehicle several display and play configurations.

One of the more memorable action features is the battle damage function. A button on the right side of the vehicle, positioned behind the cockpit, flips the pilot seat upward and sends the pilot figure forward. At the same time, the cockpit cover pops off and the sculpted-in Battle Droid behind the pilot changes from a regular Battle Droid to a battle-damaged Battle Droid, creating a fun simulated damage effect.

Because of this feature, the Trade Federation Tank cockpit cover sits somewhat loosely on top of the vehicle, allowing it to fly off when the battle damage action is triggered.

The Trade Federation Tank also has sculpted battle markings on the hull, which help give the vehicle a used battlefield appearance. The sculpted details may not be as sharp as what Hasbro could produce today, but for a 1999-era vehicle, the detailing still looks very good. Small wheels underneath the vehicle, including one under each side section and one below the cockpit area, allow the tank to roll across a shelf or play surface.

Display Value

As a display piece, the Trade Federation Tank offers a lot of variety. The rotating top cannon, adjustable side cannons, front foot pegs, opening cockpit, and rear turret hatch all give collectors several ways to present the vehicle. Even if you owned more than one Trade Federation Tank, the different cannon positions and figure placements would make each display look a little different.

The rear turret hatch can be displayed open with a Battle Droid inside, or closed for a cleaner, fully sealed vehicle look. That flexibility helps the tank work well in both action-oriented dioramas and more traditional shelf displays.

Final Thoughts

All things considered, the Star Wars Episode I Trade Federation Tank holds up remarkably well decades after its original release. Hasbro could certainly produce a sharper, more detailed version today, but no modern remake or re-release appears to be on the horizon.

Trade Federation Tank

For collectors building a Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace display, a Battle of Naboo setup, or a Trade Federation Droid Army, this vehicle is still worth considering on the secondary market. It is large, instantly recognizable, packed with features, and still one of the best ways to bring the Trade Federation Tank into a 3.75-inch Star Wars action figure collection.
