So, What Did We Learn From Hasbro's San Diego Comic Con Presentation?

7/21/2018 Hasbro San Diego Comic Con The Vintage Collection

Here is a rundown of what we have learned from Hasbro's San Diego Comic Con 2018 panel, plus images sent to us by Toy Run listener (a weekly podcast which we produce) Rob Paladino (thanks Rob!) and links to official press releases sent to us by Hasbro, and a closer look at Hasbro's fantastic San Diego Comic Con exclusives this year.

So, what did we learn from the Hasbro presentation?

The Vintage Collection 3.75"

In 2019 Hasbro will use their Photo Real face printing technology on The Vintage Collection figures. This is exciting news and means much more accurate faces and good-bye bad paint apps! Besides giving us a glimpse all the way into the middle of 2019, they also showed a The Vintage Collection TIE Fighter with pilot (a re-release of the 2009 The Legacy Collection vehicle) which will be out in August this year. They also showed several previously announced figures in their packaging. During Hasbro's annual media breakfast they revealed Enfys Nest for The Vintage Collection which will be available in August this year.

The Clone Wars 3.75"

We've also learned that Hasbro will support Star Wars: The Clone Wars with action figures, but we don't know yet in what scale the figures will be in and if they will follow the animated look from the 2008 - 2013 toy line, or if they will be new interpretations of the characters. We hope that they will continue the previous line and give us yet-to-be-made characters such as a regular Palpatine figure (they've done Darth Sidious, but never a regular Palpatine), Pong Krell, Commander Riff Tamson, Tee Watt Kaa or Admiral Trench. We'll gather your wants for Star Wars: The Clone Wars in a separate post.

Force Link 2.0 3.75"

Hasbro showed several figures from the Star Wars Force Link 2.0 series, but the future remains unclear beyond those releases. However, the figures shown looked fantastic and they will round out the line-up of Star Was figures from the SOLO movie nicely. A big surprise was the reveal of two playsets coming for the 3.75" line, including a cardboard Kessel Mine playset and a Vandor-1 playset.

Late Summer/Fall 2018

Tie Pilot with TIE Fighter (already available through online retailers)

Stormtrooper (Mimban) with AT-DT vehicle (already in our database)

The Last Jedi 5-pack including holographic Maz Kanata is now available for pre-order on Entertainment Earth (here is our database entry)

There was no word about the Walmart exclusive A-Wing Fighter (which is already available internationally) or the R2-D2/C3-PO 2-pack which was just recently found at a Canadian Toys'R'Us store.

The Black Series 6"

Hasbro revealed several exclusive figures from The Black Series for the remainder of the year and they introduced the ARCHIVE series which will be a Greatest Hits line. Every figure in this series will be packaged on a blister card and human characters will feature the PHOTO REAL face printing technology.  The first four Star Wars figures in the Black Series Archive line will include Boba Fett, IG-88, Bossk and Luke Skywalker (X-Wing Pilot). This gives fans the opportunity to pick up the entire set of Bounty Hunters from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for regular retail prices. Hasbro also showed the Imperial Patrol Trooper from SOLO: A Star Wars Story.

Overall, Hasbro brought their A-game to the convention and revealed a lot of great stuff! Playsets, great 6-inch figures, nicely sculpted and great character line-up of SOLO Force Link 2.0 figures and of course lots of information about up-coming The Vintage Collection figures. The rest of 2018 and the first half of 2019 are going to be exciting times to collect Star Wars figures!
