Everything We Learned About The Star Wars Retro Collection

2/17/2019 Star Wars Retro Collection Hasbro Kenner

Here is everything we learned about Hasbro's brand new 3.75" Star Wars Retro Collection during the New York Toy Fair 2019 presentation and by talking to team members on the show floor.

Following single carded Star Wars Retro Collection figures will be TARGET exclusive and cost $9.99 each:

  • Darth Vader
  • Luke Skywalker
  • Princess Leia Organa
  • Stormtrooper
  • Chewbacca
  • Han Solo

The pre-order for the figures went live on Target.com before the figures were officially announced and sold out quickly.

Grand Moff Tarkin is the real star of the line-up because he's a character which was never released during the original Kenner line-up between 1978 - 1985. He'll be packed in with the Star Wars Escape The Death Star board game. The game will cost $19.99 and it will not be an exclusive.

The card design was given a scuffed-up look on the front and back so that the Star Wars Retro Collection is easily identifyable as new versions of classic Kenner figures. The Hasbro team however felt it wasn't enough and they placed the red circle on the front of the card, which makes it even easier to differentiate from original figures. The circle, which is an unused Kenner concept, is printed on and not removable.

Each Star Wars Retro Collection figure will have a Hasbro copyright on the back (not Kenner), and it will have the modern production numbers and date stamps on it. As of right now the team at Hasbro is open to making the Star Wars Retro Collection an on-going series, but of course it will depend on how well the figures are received by fans. One thing we are unsure of is if the weapons and accessories will differ from the originals and we don't know yet how big the peg holes in the bottom of the feet are, but we'll stay on target for you and post an udpate once we find out.

Overall we think that this is a fantastic idea, there are enough security meassures in place to protect collectors of original Kenner figures and their investments, while at the same time giving us the chance to expand the nostalgia with never-before-released figures. Maybe after 40+ years of waiting fans will get a Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise or a Sandtrooper? We'd also love to see the prequels and sequels in the Star Wars Retro Collection over time to round out the entire Skywalker saga. Thank you Hasbro!
