Ever since the box art for The Vintage Collection Smuggler's Run Millenium Falcon was revealed a few weeks ago people have been asking if the included Chewbacca, and the six Porgs, are new and if not, what figures they are based on. So let's take a look.
So far Hasbro has only released one Porg in the 3 3/4" scale which was packed together with Chewbacca in the 2017 The Last Jedi toy line. For the Smuggler's Run Millennium Falcon they took this figure and repainted it several times. The released Porg in 2017 was a female, and female Porgs have white puffy fur around their eyes (males have puffy orange fur around their eyes -> you see, you learn something new every day!). Judging by the press photos, Hasbro will include two male Porgs (paint deco A), two female Porgs (paint deco B), and two female Porgs with paint deco C. The paint apps for the female porgs with deco B have a grey widow peak on the forhead, paint deco C is all white (that's the one which was already released with Chewie). Take a look at the picture below.
In short, Hasbro took the existing mold and kept one un-changed, and then repainted it twice to give us a total of three different Porgs. Then they doubled it and made out of the three unique Porgs a total of six, with two of each. The Porg by the way will not have any movable parts, the wings are static and sculpted onto the body.
The detective work for Chewbacca continues, the head sculpt on Chewie seems to be new, and the body appears to be a re-use of the 2005 Early Bird Kit Chewbacca. You can look at all the Chewbacca head sculpts in the J.B. system here and compare them. The satchel by the way sits too high and it's missing the buckles. What do you think, what Chewbacca is this?
